Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
