Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
