Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
