Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
