Minister Says MoD Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in any cars.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Context

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader security situation underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, from vehicle use to communication habits.
