Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no new information.
