European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
